MindfulnessI love mindfulness.
Probably like you, I am always juggling the stuff of life: full-time work, family, teenagers & 2 crazy dogs. I also endeavour to have a social life, exercise & do some things I love doing. Modern life is incredibly busy and we are surrounded by messages to do more, be more, get more. It is easy to get distracted by tasks, caught up in busy-ness and end up feeling exhausted, stressed and like we never get to do anything nice for ourselves. What can mindfulness do for us? Having a mindfulness practice keeps us calmer & steadier when life gets busy, unexpected things happen or people are less than lovely. Mindfulness helps us take better care of ourselves so we are able to take better care of others. Our practice reminds us that we have a choice about how we will let other people affect us. This makes everyday life a lot less stressful and so much more enjoyable! Mindfulness teaches us to practice gratitude for all the many little pleasant, beautiful, kind things that run through our days, rather than focussing on the negative stuff that tends to bother us and create stress. Mindfulness shows us how practicing being kind to others can make us feel good and less bothered by those people we have often found difficult or challenging. Mindfulness teaches us to be more present, to pay better attention, so we begin to naturally notice beauty and joy and all the good stuff in our lives. Mindfulness trains our minds to be more focussed, so we are less distracted or notice when we are and return to the job, conversation or person in front of us. Practicing mindfulness means we can achieve more in less time. Then we can get on with doing the things we enjoy. Mindfulness shows us how to notice signs of stress in our bodies and how to deeply relax them. Mindfulness reduces stress and improves sleep and energy levels; these things are all connected. How do we do mindfulness? There are a million ways to practice mindfulness and most are incredibly simple. It just takes practice. We are never going to stop our thoughts but we can do things that allow them to slow down and give our brains a rest. In any one session we may practice 2-4 different techniques for 5-15 minutes. These may include breathing techniques, breath focus, settling the body, bringing awareness to the body, compassion, gratitude, relaxation techniques and meditations.
